The one on the right is Chuck, my old advisor from the UO, and the other is one of his friends who was playing Apples to Apples with us and bunch of other people.
And that contraption is part of a fancy yarn winder that I would love to have! :)
Yep, that's called an umbrella swift, and it's used for helping to manage skeins of yarn (which can get all twisty and tangled if left unattended for long). I got it for my birthday, and it's great.
